It’s no exaggeration to say the Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market, a California consumer cooperative, is an institution in the beach area. People’s Organic Foods actively promoted organic produce long before it was fashionable, and has always supported environmentally responsible alternatives and sustainable living practices. When the time came to expand the co-op, their design choices clearly reflected this orientation.

O.B. People’s “green” building was constructed using nontoxic, recycled and sustainably harvested building materials at every opportunity; no old-growth wood was used. Optimal lighting is achieved while at the same time maximizing energy savings. Skylights and windows are operable and placed to maximize cross ventilation and release heat as needed. The temperature at the co-op is comfortable for shoppers yet not dependent on air-conditioning.

An energy efficient refrigeration system upgrade includes an increase of 25% in the refrigeration system condensers. This is a passive addition that reduces energy consumption by reducing the running times of electric motors and the compressors that they power. All walk-in cooler floors are insulated from the earth and include thermal barriers to prevent cold-box slabs from serving as heat sinks for the building’s concrete floor.

In the spring of 2003, People’s added a 30kW photovoltaic system to the roof. This satisfies approximately one-third of the co-op’s electrical needs.

Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market’s “green” building embraces the utilization of natural resources as much as possible, and energy efficient strategies minimize the impact on the environment. The building project has won an energy efficient design award from San Diego Gas and Electric’s Savings by Design Program.
